SportsAbility Day 2017 launched by International Athletes Alan Dineen, Matthew Kearney & Colm Monaghan

On Saturday March 25th the Cork SportsAbility Day 2017 sponsored by Blackwater Motors Volkswagen will take place at the UCC Mardyke Arena from 11am-3:00pm. The event was launched recently at the UCC Mardyke Arena by international athletes Alan Dineen (Wheelchair Rugby), Matthew Kearney (Blind Football) and Colm Monaghan (Special Olympics Football). The Cork SportsAbility Day is a showcase event where participants can try a wide range of activities and find information on club in their area.
Padraig Healy, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with Cork Sports Partnership stated “Find Your Sport is the slogan for this years event and it is fitting as the event aims to get people of all abilities participating in physical activity. This years SportsAbility Day will be bigger & better than ever before with a wide range of come & try sessions taking place including wheelchair rugby, table tennis, archery, badminton, seated volleyball, powerchair football, wall climbing to name just a few. We will also have over 25 information stands from a wide range of clubs & organisations. There will be sensory room on site for any visitors who need some quiet time during the day”.
Jean Murphy of Blackwater Motors Volkswagen said “we are excited to be sponsors of such a positive event promoting sport for all abilities. The initiative behind SportsAbility Day is great as it not only creates a wider awareness about sports inclusion but it gives people with a disability the opportunity to get involved in range of sports and find one that suits their interest all in the one venue”.
This years event has a number of workshops for visitors to attend, including two Healthy Eating workshops organised by the HSE Health Promotion Department, these will take place at 11:30am & 1:30pm in the hospitality suite at the Mardyek arena. Also new for 2017 in an Inclusive PE Workshop for teachers & SNA’S, registration form both events is available at www.corksports.ie .
Cork SportsAbility Week will be launched aon March 25th at SportsAbility Day by former international goalkeeper Packie Bonner, activities for Cork SportsAbility Week will run from Saturday March 25th – Sunday April 2nd around Cork City and County.
