Since opening our doors for the first time in September 2001, The Mardyke Arena UCC has been meeting the sporting, recreational and leisure needs of the students, staff and graduates of UCC, not to mention those of the public at large, for almost 10 years now. All in all it's been an incredible success story, due in large measure to the dedication of our staff and tremendous loyalty of our members. Catering for all ages, from pre-school to the active older person, today, The Arena is widely regarded as one of the country's finest leisure and fitness destinations, with a range of facilities that are second to none.
As part of an on-going process of planned improvements, The Arena completed it's Phase 2 Development in 2006. This saw the expansion of the fitness gym facilities, the provision of a new multi-purpose dance studio and the construction of a purpose built climbing wall hall. Conversely, 2009 brought with it the need for some unplanned development, when following the devastation wrought by the unprecedented flooding of November 19th, a major refurbishment of the entire ground floor of The Arena was required.
Presently, The Arena is undertaking it's most ambitious project to date - the Phase 3 Development which commenced at the end of February 2011. When complete, this €10 million development will represent the very best in modern design and an investment that will translate into a truly world class facility! The development will involve the demolition of the existing external viewing stand along with the existing changing rooms underneath the stand. Circa 3,700 sq metres (40,000 sq feet) will be added to The Arena (over 3 floors) and provide our current and future members, in addition to national and international visitors, with facilities that will rival the very best!
The main construction work commenced during the last week of February 2011. Work is scheduled to last just 10 months with the completed facility scheduled for hand-over in February 2012. We have already opened brand new changing facilities, gyms, lecture theatre and video-analysis suite.
