Mardyke Arena UCC Achieve a Double in “Gold” Standards

The Mardyke Arena UCC, which continues to lead the way in the Sports the Leisure industry in Ireland, has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001 Quality and OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety Management Systems certifications by Certification Europe.
The Mardyke Arena UCC has now a practical business management system in place which uses the international standard for Quality Management (ISO 9001) as an overall framework, within which the requirements of the international standard for Occupational Health & Safety management (OHSAS 18001) has been positioned.
The emphasis at Mardyke Arena UCC is on consistent, practical business improvement. The integrated quality and occupational health and safety model has allowed them to make real transformations to their management systems, which has enhanced the business without impeding operations.
Some of the newly implemented processes have shown immediate returns, particularly in the area of customer feedback and staff empowerment. Mardyke Arena UCC staff are now invested in improving individual and collective performance in the area of Quality and Occupational Health and Safety.
“Since the opening of the facility in 2001 we have strived to excel in all areas of operation and indeed we have made great strides over the last 12 years. We decided in 2012 to embark upon our ‘Drive for Excellence’ programme in order to improve our system of management and to seek formal external verification of our progress.
“As a recognised world-class facility the obvious path to take was to look for certification to world class standards such as ISO 9001 and OHSAS 18001,” Patsy Ryan, Mardyke Arena UCC General Manager said.
John Ryan, Director of Services at Certification Europe who presented the certificates to Patsy Ryan and staff at the Arena was fulsome in his praise for what has been achieved by the staff.
“The Mardyke Arena UCC have always strived for excellence from day one of their road to attaining Quality and Occupational Health & Safety standards,” John Ryan said.
“By undertaking these best practices they now have defined the internal systems which allow them to reach their goals of continuous improvement. It is a source of great pride for Certification Europe to work with future-looking organisations such as the Mardyke Arena UCC.”
The conferring ceremony took place at a gala event on Saturdaythe February 2nd in the presence of Mr. BE McMahon, Chairman of the Governing Body University College Cork and also chair of the Abbey Theatre.
More than 200 guests attended the black tie gala celebration event.
