Inter Provincial Golf Championships 2013 Supported by the Mardyke Arena UCC

19th July 2013

Munster Bid to Retain Interprovincial Crown

Reigning Champions Munster will put their title, won at Royal County Down in 2012, on the line when the 2013 Interprovincial Golf Championships supported by the Mardyke Arena UCC are staged at the Lee Valley Golf Club Cork on Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday 23/24/25 July.

Fielding all but one of last year’s team, Kieran Lynch (Skibereen GC) replacing Ian O’Rourke (Cork GC) who is in the US for the summer, the home province are quietly confident of retaining their title on home soil. Phil Cooney, Munster Captain for the second year, has said ‘that the team have prepared well and if they play to their potential and get a bit of luck then they are in with a great shout of retaining their title’

Munster PGA Coach Fred Twomey who is no stranger to the Lee Valley course says ‘that the parkland course, now turning to a links because of the warm weather, will provide a stern challenge to the top amateur golfers in the country’

A Feast of Golf

With over 20 Irish Senior Amateur Internationals playing for the 4 provinces the record crowds expected over the 3 days will be treated to a feast of top class golf. Reigning West of Ireland Champion Rory McNamara (Leinster); Niall Gorey (Munster) Runner-up West of Ireland; Robbie Cannon (Leinster) Irish Amateur Open Winner; Chris Selfridge (Ulster) reigning North of Ireland Champion and the 2012 South of Ireland Champion Pat Murray (Munster) will all play.

A star attraction from the spectators point of view will be the visit to Lee Valley GC for the first time of US based Waterford Castle golfer Kevin Phelan. Phelan who has played in 2 of the last 3 US Opens and made the halfway cut in this year’s US Open will gather a large following for his matches.

Phelan will be joined on the Munster team by his West Waterford GC friend Gary Hurley who was runner-up in the North of Ireland Championships and also partnered Phelan in the prestigious Palmer Cup.

The competition tees-off at 8am on Tuesday morning when Munster take on Connacht followed by Ulster v Leinster in the morning foursomes. 1pm sees the tee-time for the afternoon singles. Wednesday’s tee-times are the same with the winners on Tuesday playing the runners-up from Tuesday. Thursday sees the final days play with the remaining pairings teeing-off at 7.30am in the foursomes and 12.30pm in the afternoon singles.

Boys Interprovincial Championships

Also at Lee Valley GC the Interprovincial Boys Championships will take place at the same times as the Senior Championships. The boys will tee-off from the 10th tee. Four Cork lads will make-up the 7 strong Munster boys team, Paul Tobin (Mahon GC); Gary Ward (Kinsale GC); James Sugrue (Mallow GC) and Lee Valley’s own Greg O’Mahony. Robin Dawson (Faithlegg GC) and James Sugrue represented Ireland recently in the European Nations Boys Championships. Bill Murray (Waterford Castle) and Mark McGrath (Limerick GC) make up the Munster team.
