SportsAbility Day launched by Orla Barry & Ashling Thompson

2nd March 2016

On Saturday April 9th the Cork SportsAbility Day sponsored by Blackwater Motors Volkswagen will take place at the Mardyke Arena UCC from 12-3:30pm. The event was launched recently at Blackwater Motors, Turners Cross by Paralympic medallist Orla Barry & Cork Camogie star Ashling Thompson. The SportsAbility Day is a showcase and information day for all things SportsAbility in Cork.

Padraig Healy, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with Cork Sports Partnership stated “Find Your Sport is the slogan for this year’s event and it is fitting as the event aims to get people of all abilities participating in physical activity. This year’s SportsAbility Day will be bigger & better than ever before with a wide range of come & try sessions taking place including wheelchair rugby, special yoga, archery, blind football to name just a few. We will also have over 30 information stands from a wide range of clubs & organisations. We are delighted to announce a sensory room will be on site for any visitors who need some quiet time during the day. We are very grateful to Blackwater Motors Volkswagen and UCC Mardyke Arena for supporting this year’s event”.

Jean Murphy of Blackwater Motors Volkswagen said “we are excited to be sponsors of such a positive event promoting sport for all abilities. The initiative behind SportsAbility Day is great as it not only creates a wider awareness about sports inclusion but it gives people with a disability the opportunity to get involved in range of sports and find one that suits their interest all in the one venue”.

This year’s special guest is former sports commentator Micheál O Muircheartaigh. This event is not to be missed and is suitable for anyone with an interest in Sport.

The launch was attended by Orla Barry (Cork SportsAbility Forum Ambassador), Ashling Thompson (Cork Camogie player), Jean Murphy (Blackwater Motors), Padraig Healy (Cork Sports Partnership), Wayne Falvey (Mardyke Arena UCC), Terence McSweeney (Cope Foundation), Lisa Lawlor (Red FM), Paul Ryan (Irish Wheelchair Association Sport).
