11th December 2025

Mardyke Arena UCC is proud to introduce our new Calm Zone — a dedicated, sensory-aware space designed to support the wellbeing of students.

Thoughtfully created for University College Cork students who may be neurodivergent, experience sensory overload, or simply need a quiet moment to pause and reset, the Calm Zone provides a peaceful retreat within the Arena. This initiative forms part of University College Cork’s Autism Friendly University commitments and reflects our ongoing efforts to ensure our facilities remain inclusive and accessible.

Featuring soothing colours, comfortable seating, and a low-stimulus layout, the Calm Zone is designed to help students regulate during busy or overwhelming moments.

Available During the Examination Period

While the Calm Zone will officially launch in January, it is available from today for any student who may benefit from a quieter environment — particularly during the examination period beginning today.

Our team has also informed the Exams Supervisor Team, ensuring they can direct students who may need this space throughout the exam season.

Supporting the Diverse Needs of UCC Students

At Mardyke Arena UCC, our mission extends far beyond sport and fitness. We are committed to supporting the diverse needs of all UCC students and creating spaces that are inclusive, welcoming, and adaptable.

The introduction of the Calm Zone marks a meaningful step in enhancing our support for student wellbeing, sensory comfort, and inclusion on campus.
